Lessons, Morals and Friendships

Lessons, Morals, and Friendship

What is the book about?

A famous philosopher Euripides once said, “Friends show their love in times of trouble, not in happiness”. Friendships may come and go, but can also teach you an important life lesson. This book teaches us and Miranda about lessons that make her a better person or change her.

One of the main themes of this book is friendship. I say this because I see many friendships build up and deteriorate throughout the book. For example, Miranda and Sal used to be best friends at the beginning of the book until, on page 22, Chapter 7 or “Things that Stain” Sal gets punched by a “Not-too-biggish” kid who runs off and that’s basically the last time they talk in the book. Miranda said “If I’m not wrong, this is the beginning of the story you wanted me to tell. And I didn’t know it yet, but it was also the end of my friendship with Sal.” (page 24). The theme of friendship in the book asks us to think about how friendships change, who we are, and why friends are important and what lessons do they teach us. This made me think about the friendships I’ve had and how they have changed me for the better or worse.

Miranda and Colin become friends in the book, on page 54 when Miranda says “I’d seen him with his skateboard in the park a few times, and he’d always let me have a turn on it, but that was all. And then suddenly he was everywhere” it was the first time she was talking about Colin. Later on, she starts to work with him and Anne Marie at lunch at their local sandwich shop, Jimmy’s. It’s there when she starts to like Colin but also when she starts to notice that Anne Marie likes him too. She learns about love and how to like someone and be affectionate. This is an important life lesson because if you don’t know how to be compassionate, you can’t have love. She later learns that Colin likes her back and they start to date.

Anne Marie is honestly a replacement for Sal when he stops walking home from school with her. Mira had never really looked or tried to be friends with girls at her school, but she decides to befriend a girl named Annmarie. She later learns that Annemarie thinks the same about the one girl that Miranda doesn’t like, Julia.

So what does Miranda learn from Annmarie? Well, she learns about how to be jealous but still have a friendship. We all know that jealousy is one of the worst feelings, Miranda is jealous that Annmarie and Colin are working in the sandwich shop together. The littlest things can trigger our emotions, in this case, it’s not being able to put cheese on sandwiches with her crush. I know, it’s kind of sad right? But she learns the hard lesson on being jealous, but still staying friends with that person. In the book, Annmarie and Colin work behind the counter together and Miranda counts rolls behind the counter. If I were Mira I would be mad but Miranda stays friends and keeps on hanging out with her and Colin together. I think that she is a better friend and a better person because of this feeling, she is learning how to be kind.

Remember Marcus, the kid who punched Sal? Yea, he and Miranda are friends now, but that’s not all that happened between them. Miranda learned how to not judge people on who she thinks they are. She learns that he is actually really smart and likes time travel and Mira is reading a wrinkle in time. “Some people think it’s possible you know?”Marcus mumbled. “What?” He pointed to my book. “Time travel.” (Page 49) I think here she learned about who Marcus really is and when she said he had a “Concepts and Mathematics” (page 48) She was caught off guard because she didn’t know he was smart. She learns that Marcus is a really great person and she learns how to not judge people and she instantly becomes a better person.

Miranda is the the main character, a twelve-year-old girl who lives in new york. Miranda lives with her mom and frequently sees her moms boyfriend, Richard. Miranda is very observant of others feelings, she can make friendships with peoples other rejects and to make truces between bickering classmates. But her sensitivity makes her an easy person to target and is easily heartbroken when she stops being friends with sal, her best friend since 1st grade. But her sensitivity is also the reason why she can forgive Marcus for punching Sal and can see his lost and unique side that he has. She is a great main character and her sensitivity helps her be a good person to others.

So what did Mira learn? She learned many different things, she learned about friendship and relationships, she learned about jealousy and she learned about not judging people. These are all super important morals and lessons that we all learn in our early friendship years. We connect and disconnect throughout the years and every friendship we have, we take something out of it. Whether we notice it or not, we always walk away with something new for us to pass on to our friends yet to come.

Merricks Vignette|The life of a coal mining boy

It was a cold winter night. The wind was blowing hard, and the mast’s, we thought they were going break. It was about a week into our boat trip to america when we heard it would be a few more days then they planned. It was just me. I didn’t have any family, both my parents were single children and both of their parent died in a boat crash alongside my mom and dad. I didn’t have any siblings because my parents thought that I was enough. My dad hates me because I was weak and dirty and short. He said I would never be strong enough to work and i would never get married but here I am now proving him wrong by being taken away to some coal mining place. There were other boys there but they were with either a parent or a sibling. A week later we got to america and it wasn’t as pretty as I thought, there was a lot of smoke everywhere and it was a gray stormy and cloudy day so my good expectations for america were gone. I got off the boat in a line with all the other boys I saw before. There were ladies with nurse outfits on putting chalk marks on everyone who looked sick. I didn’t get one but some of the other boys of the boat did. They got put into a seperate line with all the other people who had chalk marks, the nurses said that they were just going I do a closer examination but I knew what they were actually going to do, and it wasn’t pretty. I went through a huge line with all sorts of people from all different countries and all different ages, most of them were immigrants. When I got through the line and I stepped into america, I knew my life was about to change. I first needed a job and the easiest one to sign up for was textil work which I didn’t think it was going to be that bad. After the first week of getting up at 5am and having a 30 minute dinner break and then leaving at 7, I knew i already liked the ship better. The living conditions were terrible and the food was terrible but it was the only food and roof I could get. It was better than nothing but it was still terrible. Everything was dusty and in a week i had already seen two people die. I wanted to get out of this hell hole but I keep thinking of my father and what he would say, so I will keep working there until my arms fall off and then i’ll use my legs to help some how and when those fall off, thats is when i’ll quit, that is when i’ll finally get a break from my miserable life. My only life, my life.

The Amazing Ellis Island

It was two weeks after me and my family came to Ellis Island to get a “better life” after all of my family started working, even my 6 year old brother, I think my family knew that they needed to leave. But since we were immigrants we couldn’t really leave because we didn’t have enough money to go back and it would take us months to save up for a trip back to Italy. We are jewish but since jewish people are treated differently in america, we had to be italian, which we are but, were also jewish. Jewish people were treated like dirt, we were like the food for the pigs, we get poured into the feeder which is a América and then we get eaten up by the greedy pigs who are the rich owners who don’t care about anything but themselves. Me and my brother both worked I the coal mines as hurriers. Since we were small we could crawl on our hands and knees to get to certain spots in the mine others couldn’t. We always came back home with a black silky face like if we were a shadow lurking for a nice warm shower to be clean but they just can’t get it because they are a shadow of what seem to be the greedy pigs. We only got paid a dollar a day. It wasn’t nothing but it wasn’t enough if we wanted to get off Ellis Island as fast as we could and go back to Italy where we had a better life, jobs, family and way better living conditions. I just wanted to be back to the way things were before we decide to come here. I hate it here and I honestly wish I could die in that mine. It would be a lot better then working in one, it would be quick and non painful but working in this mine is slow and painful death.

It was just me, my dad and my brother when we moved to britain, I was 5, my brother 16 and my dad half dead. He was so sick we had to come here to england, it was the only place besides america that had the right medicine but we did not want to go to america after what we’ve heard from our friends back in mexico. My dad had tuberculosis. We found out when he started to cough up blood and start to decrease in weight, really fast, he lost about 50lb in a matter of months. When we got to britain, the first thing i noticed was all of the tall buildings. And a lot of metal, not many things were made out of metal in mexico, actually, lots of things were only made out of brick or wood. We were not considered poor in mexico, we were on the more wealthy side but since we lived in mexico, we could not get a lot of the things we needed for my dad. He needed medicine, proper foods, propper bedding. All the things like that but we only had so much so we had to come here, I was worried. Our mom died because she was depressed, she didn’t have a job and our family wasn’t exactly the most liked in mexico.

“Dad?” I said,
“Stay with us dad” said my brother Michael

“Guys, I love you-”

Dead, he died, just like that. In that moment I knew I was alone, I had nowhere to go and I didnt know what to do. I could see my brother get red with anger.

“He’s gone.”

MR. Creighton Conference Merrick

Mr. Creightons Goals Essay

In this class this semester we have been doing a lot of conferences on reading and writing and how are we doing with our homework. This essay is for what we’ve been doing this semester and how we feel about what we are doing right now in school and in the class. I’m going to be writing about learning habits and my goals for this semester and talking about my routine for school work.

I think my learning habits are ok because i respect other people and teachers and I like collaborating but the perseverance at home and the responsibility at home are not too good because I don’t do my homework sometimes because I want to watch youtube or play games and I will change that and my perseverance is the same because if I can’t do something right off the bat I will just stop doing it and then do something else and then I forget about it and then I don’t finish it and then its late. My collaboration and respect are the better learning habits for me because I actually follow those learning habits and I don’t follow the responsibility and perseverance.

I feel good about my science summative because I worked really hard on it and I have a few grammar errors and i need to tweak a few things but i think i could get a meeting on it. I copy and pasted some of it and I couldn’t do that so I have to change that but I think I could do better than copy and pasting because if I put it enough work and time I will for sure get a meeting.

My goal for the rest of the year is to finish my 400 page long chapter book and finish another 200 page chapter book by the end of the year. My other goal is to finish my personal narrative by the beginning of the spring break or by the end. My other goal is to get no more beginnings on any assessments and that is my goal for next year too because my grades have been going down and I don’t want to have IE and beginnings anymore because then I get in trouble and also I don’t like having bad grades.

I think that next year will be my great year in grades because i’m going to work the hardest i’ve ever worked on school. This year im also not going to have anymore beginnings or IE because I want to have good grades so I can know more things and so that I won’t get bad grades in high school. The rest of my school days i’m going to work hard on all my school work so I wont get bad grades and ill have good grades ad then if I know more that school will be easier for me and it will be easier to get good grades and then school will just become really easy and I will have good grades.

Catapult challenge reflection

In the catapult challenge we built Catupults in a certain amount of time.  We had a limited amount of tools and we had to figure.  First we had to brain storm our idea on the table and when we were ready we could start building. Me and my partner Used popsicle sticks to make the base and we used popsicle sticks to make the sling shot and we had a really good distance.

Me and my organization

Strengths in organization

  1. I think I’m good in keeping track of my iPad and folders because I keep some of them in my locker.
  2. My other one is not having a lot of apps open because that makes the wifi slower to do my homework.

I need to get better at doing my homework sooner because I would have more time to hang out with my friends and families.  I also need to keep my list Coker organized because it looks like a bomb just exploded in my locker.

My goal is too have my locker organized for as long as I can without messing it up all the time and I think it will help me get to my books easier then befor.
